Vijay Singh

On 17 April 2026, Vijay Singh, the long-time editor-in-chief of Revolutionary Democracy, sadly died after a brief illness.

For those of us active in attempting to understand the complicated and highly intricate history of communism, Vijay Singh was an ever-present personality. Through decades of effort, he accumulated an incredible dossier of work with significant leads on many important and contested topics, especially the Stalin-era Soviet Union and the post-war construction of the people’s democracies. We believe that these contributions will continue to influence generations and only grow in significance.

A few things were characteristic of Vijay’s work: his willingness to engage in good-faith dialogue with detractors, first among them. He never personalised disagreements, utilised epithets or angry characterisations, but rather reasoned with evidence and opened new ways of thinking for both proponent and critic.

Vijay also never allowed dogmatism to overtake his outlook, nor did he rest on his laurels. This trait inspired his important work in archiving rare sources that might otherwise have been lost to the most unforgiving force of all: time. Often these sources were and are accompanied by brief editorial comments, allowing the reader to clearly see the significance of the document. Through this, he was also able to re-evaluate history, life and his own views based on new evidence — a ceaseless, constant process in all his activities.

A life well lived, and, as a rarity in today’s world, he will continue to inspire our own work. If communism has a future, it will require many more individuals like Vijay Singh.

The following statement reproduced from Revolutionary Democracy reflects how his closest collaborators remember him.
