Description
“Our Enver” is Ramiz Alia’s book on the role of Comrade Enver Hoxha in building the new Albania, including Comrade Enver’s stances on many key questions of principle, many personal anecdotes and notes about their relationship. It goes through all the major events of the National Liberation War and after — including the struggle against various internal and external enemies, the Khrushchevites and Titoites, etc. Describing Comrade Enver Hoxha’s keen attention to the youth, it shows how, even amidst the grave situation of the anti-fascist partisan war, he dedicated an immense amount of time to educating the youth comrades, specifically at a Party school set up without paper or pens in Panarit. It tells how Comrade Enver, in coordination with the anti-fascist peasant schoolteacher Ndrec Ndue Gjoka, gave the call to set up mass general education even when over 90 per cent of Albania was illiterate, beginning in the Mirdita district. Showing him as an ardent internationalist, it describes how he gave the order for the 5th and 6th Divisions to aid the Yugoslav people’s liberation. It touches on the keen issues of socialist construction, both in creating a modern working class and collectivizing the peasantry, on the great attention he gave to the development of the Albanian people’s culture, how Comrade Enver Hoxha studied everything new in science to help national progress, how he ceaselessly fought against the superpowers and worked for the ever-increasing democratization of the people’s state power. These are just a few main points, always from the standpoint of the author. Due to that personal aspect, after reading this book one truly feels like they know Enver Hoxha. More than anywhere else, where it shines is by giving an inside perspective into those last days of Comrade Enver Hoxha and the events surrounding his passing. It certainly does not fail to capture the extreme emotion of those moments, either personally or of the Albanian people.
