Description

Published for the first time, using the Russian edition as a basis, is Comrade Enver Hoxha’s “On Literature and Art”, selections from different works where he speaks about the form and content of socialist culture in Albania. At the time, as the bourgeois-revisionist world was degenerating with its conservative and liberal culture, socialist Albania took a stand against both reactionary trends as effects of moribund capitalism. It took all that was progressive internationally and nationally, imbued it with a rich socialist content and produced a beautiful people’s culture and kept their heroic traditions alive. The method of achieving this, of course, was socialist realism. Not an abstract realism, conjured up in the “great minds” of individuals, but a socialist realism found while toiling with the masses, learning and experiencing their daily work to defend and uplift the socialist homeland. The experience of Albania at that time, and the thinking of Comrade Enver Hoxha that guided them, proved further that nothing in culture can be separated from the people, from its class basis, and that the most beautiful works serve to enlighten the people for the present and upcoming class struggles, must be appreciable to proletarian tastes and morality.
