Description
Nicolae Ceaușescu: Selected Works offers a view into the ideological, political and cultural worldview of Romania’s best-known communist. Compiled from major speeches, essays and interventions spanning decades, this collection demonstrations both the ambitions and contradictions of the man and socialism in Romania during the 20th century.
At its heart, the book traces the Romanian people’s struggle for independence, national dignity and social transformation. From the revolutionary uprisings of the 19th century to Romania’s role in the defeat of fascism, Ceaușescu describves Romanian history as one of continuity: a people shaped by sacrifice and the fight for liberation. “The blood shed in common by the Romanian and Soviet soldiers on the anti-Hitler front,” he declared, “laid the foundation for the fraternal collaboration that has been established between our countries and peoples.” These pages recall Marasesti, the War of Independence of 1877 and the anti-fascist struggle, situating Romania’s future within a wider brotherhood with the Soviet Union and the socialist world.
Yet the book also reveals the leader’s views on Marxism-Leninism, socialism and democracy within Romania. Ceaușescu expounds on the responsibilities of intellectuals, artists and scientists, insisting that “the comprehension and assimilation by the people [is] the supreme reason for the existence of any art.” In one of the volume’s sections, “The Right to Publish,” he tells the parable of a poet isolated in his ivory tower — artistic elitism divorced from the people. Literature, music and art, he insists, must serve the people of their own time, not imagined audiences on other planets or in distant centuries.
Finally, the text offers Ceaușescu’s reflections on democracy, freedom and humanitarian questions. Rejecting Western double standards, he maintained that equality cannot exist between nations where some possess vast wealth and others struggle to survive on less than a hundred dollars per person annually. According to him, Romania’s model of democracy was “much more superior” to what was celebrated in the capitalist world. This edition is being published so the reader can weigh both the merits and errors of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a sober light.
