What is the World Economic Forum?

On January 16, 2023, the World Economic Forum (WEF) opened its annual meeting under the banner “Cooperation in a Fragmented World.” One must immediately ask: co-operation amongst whom? Evidently, this is a name given with the aim of a co-operation which excludes Russia, blaming them for the present crisis which only the neo-liberal world order has fostered. One thus pejoratively may term it the “Western Economic Forum,” with even China’s presence being little more than a call for the Western bourgeoisie to invest capital in their country. Despite the rupture of the capitalist world, the WEF remains a gathering of individuals with immense political and economic power which at present hold the keys to many issues concerning humanity.

In this capacity, it becomes crucial to know what the WEF is. There is a great amount of disinformation on this topic, not just from “left”, “right” and “centre,” but from the so-called “objective” bourgeois press. One insists it is a global cabal of children-eating pedophile elites, another insists it simply gathers and discusses crucial issues to all of humanity such as climate change. Others claim that such things as the “Great Reset” simply don’t exist at all. All this is meant to disinform, to create an array of fog so thick that one cannot actually establish truth from facts, because the facts change everywhere you look.

As the two articles in TML Monthly of February 2021 point out, ” The content of the 2021 WEF in the midst of a global pandemic, economic crisis and ongoing imperialist wars is of interest to the world’s peoples only to the extent of knowing what the imperialists and governments in their service are thinking and conniving to do.”

Actually, it is a highly exclusive club, which takes tens of thousands of dollars to enter, depending on the individual’s “level” — it “is a public/private partnership of the global ruling oligarchy,” composed of “billionaires, CEOs… directors of the world’s largest corporations… the International Monetary Fund” and others, which serves to set the agenda of global capital in stabilizing itself amidst the crises caused by its own moribundity.

The “Great Reset,” which many have regarded as a mere conspiracy, is an actual policy initiative of the WEF. It seeks to grapple with and minimize the innumerable negative effects of 30+ years of neo-liberal rule, which it itself has perpetuated, hoping to “rescue imperialism not only from revolution but from certain rogue and competing oligarchs,” the latter part meaning other capitalists hoping to re-divide the world’s markets.

But “The fact remains that imperialism as the highest and final form of the capitalist system cannot be reformed or reset to change its stripes and motivation for maximum profit.” No amount of annual WEF meetings can prevent the capitalist crises from going full circle, liberating social productive forces from the enchainment of private appropriation, or water from turning into steam, to use the analogy of the great Engels. What such meetings of the monopoly bourgeoisie reveal is “the necessity today of conscious history-making by the peoples with their human factor/social consciousness.”
